<![CDATA[Prairie Icons]]>Sat, 08 Aug 2020 20:16:32 GMThttp://horseswest.ca/stories/prairie-iconsIt's easy to lose the memories of history when they are no longer a visual aspect of our lives.
One person who has amassed a collection of elevator pictures over the years is Judy Dahl. In her article, The Last Elevator in Cayley, she showcases some prairie icons that are long since gone.
"In the late 70’s and again in the 80’s I traveled to Southern Alberta towns that still had standing elevators with one purpose in mind. I wanted to get as many photos of these vanishing landmarks on film as I could."

<![CDATA[A Tip of the Hat]]>Sat, 25 Jul 2020 23:08:40 GMThttp://horseswest.ca/stories/a-tip-of-the-hatThe traditions and lifestyle of a cowboy are a lifelong journey. A tip of the hat goes out to these women, men, and families who are recognized as we celebrate the National Day of the Cowboy on the fourth Saturday of July. They are the ones who broke trail, work in the fields, wrangle cattle, work hard, and play hard to make way for the next generation to follow in their footsteps.

<![CDATA[Is It All A Facade?]]>Mon, 17 Feb 2020 18:44:47 GMThttp://horseswest.ca/stories/is-it-all-a-facade
Conjecture on my part that the swagger is a forgery. Executed to imitate his idea of a cowboy-cum-truck driver? A walk that does not resonate as something he learned from a previous lifestyle.

Black garb, accentuated by a plain blue shirt, topped off with a well worn, black cowboy hat. Pant legs, half tucked into his cowboy boots. Perhaps trying too hard to recreate an idle from a different era.

A second or third day’s growth surrounds an established goatee. It screams he wants to be different. Making the statement that he is striving for a new look. Possibly an attempt to transition away from his old life?

Is the underlying, stereotypical sight I think I am seeing, all wrong? There is the innate possibility that he is just a regular guy. One who parked his rig outside the restaurant so he could have a meal. Perhaps it’s on purpose that he portrays himself in a different light? A ruse so he can eat in peace? The ultimate goal to go about his business, incognito and uninterrupted, is once again fulfilled.

Is it all a facade?

Maybe…

<![CDATA[Illusion of a Cowboy Poet]]>Thu, 02 Jan 2020 16:06:58 GMThttp://horseswest.ca/stories/illusion-of-a-cowboy-poet
On the horizon some 800 yards out
An unusual sight needed some learnin’ about
Come close glasses makin’ the scan
Not one, but two shapes—sure wasn’t a man
Across the creek, up the hill at last
Had to be coyotes movin’ that fast
At the top of the ridge those vermin swung round
Laughter erupted at what had been found
Those coyotes leavin’ the waterin’ hole
Turned out to be bovines on top of that knoll
An excerpt from Ann Edall-Robson's Hanna's Story

<![CDATA[It Takes A While]]>Wed, 25 Dec 2019 22:55:37 GMThttp://horseswest.ca/stories/it-takes-a-whileWelcome to The Journey Home.
Throwing caution to the wind might seem the route to take when one embarks on writing a blog. But, it soon becomes obvious one cannot do that and stay true to the beliefs.

It takes a while to bring a plan together to move forward.
The Journey Home lets us wander through many facets of our western history, past, and present. Guests will be joining us to share their stories, pictures, and relevant material. We will dust off archived pieces, introducing perspectives from other eras. Our goal is to pay homage to those who, in one way, or another are linked to the western lifestyle.
As Izaak Walton said, “Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter.”
Thanks for trailing along. We look forward to getting to know you and hearing from you.
